VANDALIAN TOWER
The Vandalian Tower, now a ruin, was built high on the Downs, above the village of South Harting in West Sussex. The tower's title came from an American colony called Vandalia. Sir Matthew Fetherstonhaugh employed Henry Keene to build it for his son, Harry, in 1774 because Emma Lyon, a maid of the household, was his mistress. Later, she married Sir William Hamilton, British Minister to Naples and eventually took the title of Lady Hamilton, the lover of Lord Horatio Nelson. |
